Re: Stackpole Interview about Union
Read it First!
From Kim:
You know, having read this article, I think it's really sexist of Stackpole to think that in the GFFA it would be a given that women are the ones who plan the wedding and give a rat's ass about it, and that because of this it would give an excuse for Leia and Mara to bond.
I mean, Luke is the one who's so into reviving the Jedi traditions and all that crap. It would make sense for him to plan the wedding if he were trying to recreate the Glory of the Old Republic and whatnot.
Compare this with the much more interesting portrayal of the Klingon wedding of Worf and Dax. In that, it was Worf who handled all the wedding details, and he was the one who cared how it went. All Dax did was give a major bachelor party and show up on time (and fight with her in-laws).
As much as I love the SW milieu, it's this kind of knee-jerk patriarchalism (despite the general coolness of Leia and even the butt-kicking scenes with Amidala) that MAKES ME CRAZY!
From Dianora:
The article says:
"She was basically compelled by the
Emperor to kill Luke Skywalker."
--And isn't that a convenient excuse? ::rolling eyes::
"Well, Mara had to deal with her compulsion to
kill Luke at first, but then romance could blossom."
--I can see how that would be a stumbling block to a relationship.
"If you want to be able to take all your
customized figures and do a cool diorama of the
wedding, here's your chance, guys!"
--Oh my god...
"Well, the kind of the feel that we have decided<
we wanted to play with was along the lines of
Shakespeare in Love"
::Dianora picks up gun, holds to head::
"As a female fan of comics, it's wonderful to
read really great depictions of interesting and strong
women who don't lose their inherent femininity, and
Mara Jade is one character who really fits that
description."
::puts gun down, vomits instead::
"You really come to see, for
example, how Princess Leia is very different from
Mara Jade, and Mara is different from Iella or Mirax.
Having this opportunity to round-out the women of
the universe and bring them together for this occasion
is kind of cool."
--Hey, what about Dani the Zeltron? Oh, wait, we want to pretend the Marvel comics never existed that's right.... :P
